Philip-Robinson-Bristol-ENT-Surgeon-Surgery

I am a Consultant Adult and Paediatric Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Surgeon at the University Hospitals Bristol NHS trust based at St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary, the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and Southmead Hospital, as well as working at the Spire Bristol Hospital.

I was appointed as a Consultant in 1994 and I work with both adults and children. I have developed a specialist practice in complex ear disease and deafness, receiving many tertiary referrals from other Consultants.  I have also developed a specialist practice in nose and sinus surgery and all aspects of paediatric ENT.  I continue to carry out general ear, nose and throat clinics and surgery as well.

I am the Director and Founder of the West of England Cochlear Implant Programme, and also established multidisciplinary clinics for Tinnitus, Balance disorders, ENT/ Immunology and Allergy, and paediatric Rhinitis at Southmead Hospital.

I have developed very close links with a group of other professionals, such as a Hearing Therapist, Voice Therapists, dedicated theatre nurses and very experienced adult and paediatric Anaesthetists, as well as other Consultants, to provide a multi-disciplinary team approach to my patients’ care.  I have worked with Fiona Watts, the Hearing Therapist since 1994 and she supports all my daytime clinics.  All my clinics have audiological support for hearing tests.

I come from a medical family and qualified in medicine from the University of Bristol in 1981.  After House jobs in Bristol, I spent a year teaching anatomy at the University of Bristol.  I completed my basic surgical training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Bristol Children’s Hospital.

My specialist surgical training in ENT was carried out at University College Hospital and the Middlesex Hospitals, London, as well as Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

I had additional sub-specialist training with a Fellowship in Paediatric ENT at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, a Fellowship in Otology and Cochlear Research at the University of Michigan in the USA, and a Fellowship in Rhinoplasty, Facial Plastic Surgery and Sinus Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.

I have been very involved in the training of ENT Surgeons, and I am on the Specialist Advisory Committee for training in Otolaryngology at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. I was Chairman of the Regional Specialist Training Committee from 2009 – 2013.

I continue to be active in clinical research, particularly related to cochlear implants and I regularly lecture, both nationally, and internationally.

GF Lecturer 2104
I was honoured to be invited to give the Graham Fraser Memorial lecture, speaking on
“From Infancy to Maturity; Successes and Challenges in Paediatric Cochlear Implantation”,
in February 2014 at the Royal Society of Medicine, London.

I am a family man and an enthusiastic skier, sailor and mountain walker.
